Things to do in Shimen District
Photographers flock to Laomei Green Reef to capture the beautiful lava-formed rock channels covered in vibrant algae and seaweed. The reef is exposed at low tide, with the brightest greens appearing in April and May. Stroll along the beach to peer into crystal-clear tide pools filled with colourful sea creatures.
Cape Fugui juts into the East China Sea and is the northernmost point of Taiwan. Fuguijiao Lighthouse towers over the cape and commands sweeping views over the coastline. If you’re lucky, you might spot whales and dolphins splashing offshore. After visiting the lighthouse, walk to Fuji Fishing Harbour and enjoy ocean-fresh seafood for lunch.
Shimen Stone Arch, also known as Shimendong, is one of the most striking rock formations on the northern coast. Walk down to the beach to stroll under the arch or explore the clifftop trails. The adjacent park is popular with kite flyers and hosts the annual Shimen International Kite Festival.
Qingshan Falls cascades down a rocky cliff and is surrounded by lush vegetation. Follow the trail through the rainforest to the falls and take a dip in the emerald-green pool. The moss-covered trail can get slippery so be sure to wear good shoes.
