Encompassing what is often referred to as “Pescadores Island”, Siyu Township forms part of Taiwan’s Penghu Archipelago. It was the site of the 1683 Battle of Penghu, a huge naval battle that was fought between the Qing Dynasty and the Kingdom of Tungning. Today, it is dotted with centuries-old forts and lighthouses and is home to a museum dedicated to crabs.
Things to do in Xiyu Township
If you’re interested in the natural history of the Penghu Islands, visit the Chuwan Crab Museum. It showcases the variety of crabs found in the archipelago, with several living specimens on display. The museum is located alongside the Chuwan Dayi Temple, an elaborately decorated house of worship with a turtle-filled pond.
One of Siyu Township’s most notable architectural landmarks is the Erkan Chen Residence, which was built in 1910 by two brothers in a classic Southern Fujian style. Designed with three halls, it features beautiful carvings around its windows, doors and eaves. The residence is a short drive from a spectacular wall of basalt columns that were uncovered during the Japanese colonial period.
Connecting Siyu Island with Baisha Main Island is the Penghu Great Bridge, which was originally completed in 1970. It stretches 2,494 metres in length and spans 13 metres in width, with its white arch a popular photography spot. At the bridge’s northern end is the Tongliang Fishing Harbor, where you’ll find a centuries-old banyan tree that shades an attractive picnic spot.
