Penghu County is made up of almost 100 islands scattered across the Taiwan Strait. The region is known for spectacular scenery, with soaring basalt columns, sandy beaches and turquoise bays just some of the incredible landscapes that define the archipelago. When you’re not island hopping and basking on sandy beaches, spend your time visiting historic temples, exploring rural villages and devouring some of the freshest seafood in Taiwan.
Things to do in Penghu
Day trips to the Outer Penghu Islands showcase some of the archipelago’s most impressive seascapes. You’ll see the stunning Jibei Sand Tail on postcards sold across Taiwan and it’s easy to see why. The sugar-white sand spit juts into the turquoise sea and is a tropical paradise. Just off the coast of Chimei, the Twin Hearts Stone Weir was once used to trap fish but is now a symbol of romance. Other not-to-be-missed islands include Tongpan and Wang'an.
Magong, the largest island in the Penghu Archipelago, is a great base for exploring the region. It’s anchored by a charm-soaked Old Town where you’ll find centuries-old buildings and beautiful temples. Trendy cafes, restaurants and boutiques showcase Magong’s contemporary side.
Seafood is a staple in Penghu County, with local fisherman hauling in their catches using traditional nets. Visit bustling Suogang Fishing Harbour to watch the action unfold. Fishing tours take you out onto the water and offer a chance to reel in shrimp, crab, sea urchin and other delicacies. For dessert, enjoy a scoop of cactus ice cream, a local delicacy. You’ll also see cactus used to make slushies, sweets and even beer.
In the spring and summer, the Penghu Islands come alive with colourful festivals and shimmering fireworks displays. In winter, the coastal winds pick up and Penghu County transforms into one of the most exhilarating wind and kite surfing destinations in the world.
