Aside from its geysers, Rotorua is most renowned for its redwood trees. Be sure to visit the Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest, a spectacular forest park located just outside of town. Hike or mountain bike on its scenic trails through Redwood Grove or spend a half day journeying all the way to the Blue and Green lakes.
To see more geysers, head to Te Puia, home to the famous Pohutu geyser. Tour mud pools and view silica formations, before checking out the traditional schools of wood carving and weaving and watching the captivating Maori dances.
Plan a visit to the Wingspan National Bird of Prey Centre, an ideal destination for animal lovers. The centre is dedicated to preserving three threatened local bird species, including the owl, falcon and hawk. You can tour the museum’s exhibitions, view the incubation area and hold one of the resident birds of prey.
Getting around Rotorua
Rotorua is well-connected by roadways to the rest of New Zealand and is three hour’s drive from Auckland. Rotorua’s compact CBD and comprehensive public bus system makes for easy transportation around the city centre.
