Bay Of Plenty combines centuries of history and culture with the spectacular scenery New Zealand is famous for. The evocatively named region lives up to its reputation with gold-sand beaches, rugged volcanic landscapes and an incredible food and wine scene.
Things to do in Bay of Plenty
The harbourside city of Tauranga is a launchpad to the Bay Of Plenty region. Stroll down to the revitalised waterfront district and take your pick of bars, bistros and restaurants. Sit down for ocean-fresh seafood accompanied by a glass of local Chardonnay. In the city centre, Tauranga Art Gallery showcases contemporary works in a stylish setting.
Work up a sweat on a morning hike to the summit of Mauao. The 232-metre-high extinct volcano towers over the town of Mount Maunganui and has sweeping views over Tauranga Harbour. The ascent takes around an hour. For a gentler hike, opt for the scenic loop around the base of the volcano.
Get off the beaten track and take a dip in the Pori Pori waterhole. Surrounded by fern-covered rocks, the natural pool is fed by the Wairoa River and is one of the best-kept secrets in Bay Of Plenty. Bask in the sunshine and enjoy a picnic on the rocks.
Gold-sand beaches, lashings of sunshine and bustling town centre make Whakatāne a crowd-pleasing holiday destination. In summer, the town comes alive with markets, street musicians and food trucks. Whakatāne is also the Kiwi Capital of the World, meaning there’s a good chance to spot the iconic native bird. Venture out of town to visit Te Wairere, a tumbling waterfall surrounded by verdant cliffs. The out-and-back trail takes around three hours to complete. Allow time for a swim in the crystal-clear pool.
