East of Tauranga, Papamoa is a beachside suburb in the Bay of Plenty Region. It has been settled by Māori people since around 1400 AD, with the remains of several pā fortified settlements still visible today. Today, Papamoa is one of the largest and fastest-growing suburbs in Tauranga.
Things to do in Papamoa
Offering spectacular views across the coastline is Papamoa Hills Regional Park, which encompasses archaeological remains of significance to the Ngaiterangi, Ngati Pukenga and Waitaha A Hei tribes. Follow the hiking trail that leads to the park’s 224-metre-high summit, taking in pine forests and ancient pā sites along the way.
Extending the length of Papamoa is a 16-kilometre-long stretch of white sand where you can spend your days swimming and sunbathing. Backed by the grassy dunes of the Papamoa Coastal Reserve, it’s the perfect setting for fishing, surfing and long strolls. Elevated views of the beach are on offer from Arie’s Lookout while 360-degree panoramas can be enjoyed from Micky's Mountain.
A short drive inland from Papamoa is Kaiate Falls, a pair of spectacular waterfalls that tumble into a picturesque swimming hole. A forested trail leads to the lower fall as it plunges along the Kaiate Stream, which eventually drains into the Waitao River. In the summer months, you can refresh with a swim and relax over a picnic lunch before continuing to the three-tiered upper fall.
