Overlooking a bay on the north coast of Murter Island, Murter is a picturesque settlement in North Dalmatia. It’s long been a hub for wooden shipbuilding and encompasses the remains of an ancient Roman settlement, as well as beautiful beaches lapped by the Adriatic Sea.
Things to do in Murter
A short drive from the centre of Murter is Colentum, the site of an ancient Roman settlement inhabited between the 1st century BC and the 5th century AD. It’s often referred to as the “Town of Mosaics” due to the mosaics that have been uncovered during excavations. Learn about Colentum’s importance as a trade hub and harbour as you explore the remains of its once-bustling seaport.
Also not to miss is the Muzej Betinske Drvene Brodogradnje, which explores the history of wooden shipbuilding on the island. Hear about the unique traditions and techniques that are used to create small kaićs and large cargo ships as you explore the multimedia exhibits. Moored alongside the museum are several beautifully crafted vessels.
Murter makes an ideal base for exploring the island’s beaches, including ever-popular Slanica on the south coast. You can relax on the white sands of Podvrske Beach while enjoying views towards the Kornati Islands or visit the secluded beach of Cigrade, which is fringed by pine trees.
