Renowned for its welcoming atmosphere, Hillcrest is a lively neighbourhood and the centre of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ scene. It’s home to buzzing cafes, ethnically diverse restaurants and bars, as well as an eclectic mix of boutique shops and independent cinemas.
Wander down the main thoroughfare, University Avenue, which is clustered with global eateries, wine bars and homewares stores, then visit the world’s first openly gay brewery at the Hillcrest Brewing Company. Browse the vintage clothing boutiques and second-hand bookstores on Fifth Avenue or shop for fresh produce and flowers at the weekly Hillcrest Farmers Market.
Coincide your visit with the annual Pride parade that begins beneath the towering rainbow flag in the east of Hillcrest and ends with a two-day festival in nearby Balboa Park. The neighbourhood is also home to Harvey Milk Street, which is named after the influential gay rights activist and where the San Diego LGBTQ+ Community Center resides.
