Get lost in the winding medieval streets of El Barri Gotic. Also known as the Gothic Quarter, the neighbourhood is the historic heart of Barcelona. It’s home to some of the city’s most treasured landmarks, including La Catedral.
Things to do in Gothic Quarter
Handsome stone buildings frame the cobblestone streets and squares of El Barri Gotic. It’s here you’ll find some of the trendiest cafes, tapas bars and bistros in Barcelona. Tables and chairs spill onto the streets and add to the postcard-perfect setting.
La Catedral soars over El Barri Gotic and is one of Spain’s most spectacular landmarks. The magnificent Gothic façade is decorated with hundreds of leering gargoyles, as well as elephants, unicorns and other mythical beasts. Stroll through the impressive central nave and descend into the crypt to see the tomb of the city’s beloved patron saint. Ride the lift up the tower for dizzying views over El Barri Gotic and Barcelona’s city centre.
Discover the city’s fascinating Roman roots at Museu d’Història de Barcelona. It’s located on the ruins of an ancient Roman city and offers a fascinating glimpse of the stone streets, bathhouses and villas that once stood on the site. Admire beautifully preserved murals and mosaics, peer into a Roman wine cellar and walk through the cavernous banqueting hall.
From rustic bodegas to stylish fine-dining bistros, El Barri Gotic boasts some of the best Catalan restaurants in Barcelona. Try local favourites like “escalivada” roasted vegetables drizzled with olive oil and “esqueixada de bacalla” shredded salt cod salad. Lunchtime “menu del dia” options are great value for money.
