Ang Thong is one of the most spectacular marine parks in Southeast Asia, immersing you in a wonderland of soaring limestone cliffs, emerald-green lagoons and idyllic sandy beaches. The park is an archetypal tropical paradise and protects not only stunning coastal landscapes but also a thriving underwater ecosystem.
Boat tours depart from nearby islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Cruising around the marine park, it’s easy to see why Ang Thong was the inspiration for Alex Garland’s iconic novel, “The Beach”. Most tours call at Emerald Lake, an eye-popping inland lagoon surrounded by jungle-covered cliffs. A steep staircase leads up to a spectacular viewpoint.
Most tours of Ang Thong run during the day, but if you’re feeling adventurous, consider staying the night in one of the rustic bungalows on Koh Wua Talab. Kayak rentals offer a chance to explore the park at your own pace while a small restaurant serves delicious curries, noodle dishes and smoothies.
