Things to do in Yongsan-gu
Foodies should make a beeline for Itaewon, a lively enclave within Yongsan-gu. It boasts one of the most exciting restaurant scenes in Asia and will tempt you with everything from dumplings and pho to pizza and fried chicken. On the streets of Yongsan-gu you’ll find stalls selling traditional South Korean delights. Specialties include “tteokbokki” spicy rice cakes, “eomuk” fish cakes and kimchi pork steamed buns.
Works by international masters such as Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst make Leeum Samsung Museum of Art one of the top galleries in South Korea. The museum occupies a striking contemporary building and showcases modern art alongside traditional Korean paintings, ceramics, calligraphy and relics from the Joseon and Goryeo dynasties.
Housed in an imposing concrete building, the National Museum of Korea charts the rich history, heritage and culture of the country. You can learn about the Korean Empire, Baekje Kingdom, Joseon Dynasty and other fascinating periods. After touring the museum, enjoy a leisurely stroll around the surrounding gardens. Don’t miss the beautiful reflection pool and tumbling Dragon Falls.
Stretch your legs and enjoy sweeping views over the city in Itaewon Bugundang History Park. The park is perched on a hilltop and is dotted with leafy trees, and it’s worth staying late to enjoy the beautiful sunsets.
Getting around Yongsan-gu
Yongsan-gu is served by two major train stations - Seoul Station and Yongsan Station. The district is also served by lines 1, 4 and 6 of the Seoul Subway while local buses are a fast and affordable way to get around. Incheon International Airport is one hour away by car or train.
