Sillim-dong is a lively neighbourhood built around Seoul National University. You can visit excellent museums and galleries and work up a sweat on one of the most popular hiking trails in the city. Fast subway connections make it easy to sightsee in the city centre and visit sights like the ultra-modern Dongdaemun Design Plaza and historic Gyeongbokgung Palace.
Things to do in Sillim-dong
Seoul National University Museum of Art showcases work by local students and established Korean artists. The collection is housed in a futuristic building and features a variety of contemporary mediums, including paintings, prints, photography and sculptures.
Ancient ceramics, pottery, paintings and books are just some of the treasures on display at the Horim Museum. Admire a centuries-old golden crown in the Archaeology Gallery and view sacred Joseon Dynasty scripts in the Painting and Book Gallery. Enjoy lunch at the café and browse the gift shop after touring the museum.
Escape the city and enjoy a scenic hike in the Gwanaksan Mountain recreational area. The main trail starts on the Seoul National University campus and winds through a forest before climbing up the slopes of the mountain. The hike to the summit takes around two hours and rewards you with fantastic views over Seoul.
Bustling Nokdu Street is popular with local students and lined with shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. It’s a short stroll from Seoul National University and is a great place to try local dishes like “japchae” noodles, “ddukbokki” spicy rice cakes and Korean BBQ.
Getting around Sillim-dong
Sillim-dong is located in the Gwanak District of Seoul. The neighbourhood is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, while taxis are a fast and affordable way to get from A to B. Trains run between City Hall Station and Sillim Station on Line 2 of the Seoul Subway in around 30 minutes. Incheon International Airport is a 45-minute drive away.
