Yeongdo-gu is a breezy district set on a picturesque island. The island is a stone’s throw from Busan but feels world’s away from the buzzing port city. Explore scenic coastal trails, hike to the summit of a forested mountain and visit one of the top maritime museums in South Korea.
Things to do in Yeongdo-gu
The National Maritime Museum of Korea occupies an ultra-modern building on the east side of the island. The lobby features a walk-through aquarium where you can see colourful fish and sea turtles. In the exhibition halls, you can view models of traditional wooden sailing ships and artefacts recovered from local shipwrecks.
Mt. Bongnaesan towers almost 400 metres over Yeong Island. Hike up the mountain for sweeping views over the Busan skyline, as well as the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Japan. The trail is shaded by pine and cypress trees. Enjoy a snack at the summit before heading back down.
Stretch your legs and enjoy beautiful views on the Jeolyeong Coastal Trail. Parts of the trail skirt the beach and others climb up to the clifftops. Cross the suspension bridge and walk through a stone tunnel carved into the cliffsides and visit Namhang Village to enjoy lunch at a local seafood restaurant.
Board the miniature train and take a spin around Taejongdae Park. As you explore the park, you’ll discover a unique landscape of lush pine forests and rugged coastal cliffs. The train stops at several interesting landmarks, including a postcard-perfect lighthouse and a temple set in hydrangea-filled gardens. On clear days, the views from the scenic lookout stretch all the way to Tsushima Island in Japan.
Getting around Yeongdo-gu
