Incorporated as a city in 1923, West Covina lies directly east of Downtown Los Angeles. In the post-World War II years, it was one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States and is now dotted with shopping malls and suburban parks. West Covina is famed as the setting for the acclaimed comedy series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”.
Things to do in West Covina
For insight into the local history, stop by the Baldwin Park Historical Society Museum, which exhibits antiques, vintage clothing and military uniforms. Learn about the importance of cattle ranching when the area was part of the San Gabriel Mission before vineyards were planted. Further north is the Glendora Historical Society Museum, which houses memorabilia dating back to the 17th century.
Need a retail fix? Head to the Plaza West Covina, which is home to more than 200 retail stores, including Macy’s, JC Penney and Sears. When it’s time to eat, you’ll find plenty of fast-food eateries in the second-level food court. Alternatively, you can shop at Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Burlington Coat Factory in the Eastland Center or visit Home Depot at The Heights at West Covina.
On the southern edge of West Covina is Galster Wilderness Park, which encompasses 17 hectares of leafy walking trails and one of the last remaining tracts of Southern California black walnut woodland. It takes its name from Emil and Gladys Galster, who deeded the park to the city in 1971, and includes a small museum and educational centre.
Getting around West Covina
West Covina is around 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Los Angeles and an hour from Los Angeles International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Regular buses connect to West Covina and Metrolink trains stop at the nearby Covina railway station.
