Nestled in an alpine valley, Valles is a picturesque village in the Italian province of South Tyrol. Its mountainous setting makes it a paradise for hikers in the summer months before transforming into a winter wonderland for skiing and tobogganing once the snow begins to fall.
If you’re visiting in the summer months, hike to the Malga Fane alpine pasture while learning about the region’s dairy industry. Malga Fane also provides access to the 3,134-metre-high summit of Picco della Croce. You can soak up the mountainous views on the challenging Alta Via di Fundres and feast on Tyrolean delicacies in one of the mountain huts.
In the wintertime, hit the downhill runs of the Jochtal skiing area, which has options to suit all abilities. Cross-country skiers can explore along the eight-kilometre circuit route while kids will love tobogganing down the gentle slopes.
Getting there
Valles is around 25 minutes’ drive from Brixen and an hour from Bolsano Airport, which has flights to destinations across Europe. Buses connect to Valles, although having your own vehicle is the most convenient way of accessing the valley. The village is small enough to explore on foot.
