The Cavern Club is an entertainment bar and nightclub located on Mathew Street in Central Liverpool, Merseyside. It is well-known for being a popular venue of choice for The Beatles during their early days on the club circuit. Legendary artist manager Brian Epstein signed the band after watching them dominate the stage of the Cavern Club. The venue has also played host to some of Rock and Roll’s greatest bands. The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, John Lee Hooker, Black Sabbath and The Who have all played here. It remains a major attraction for all music fans visiting the city.
The iconic Cavern Club was based on the sultry Paris underground jazz clubs. The dimly lit, stone vaulted cave like dwellings made them atmospheric and popular with hip crowds. Today, visitors recognise the Cavern Club by the lifelike John Lennon sculpture outside the front door, and the clubs “Wall of Fame”. Music fans can venture inside, enjoy a drink, and listen to resident bands which play today. Imagine what it was like in the early 1960s, when bands took to the stage for the first time. Budding musicians can join the Cavern Club Rock School. Visitors can learn to play the guitar, piano/keyboards or drums. Successful participants gain the opportunity to perform in an annual showcase and grace the same stage as their pop idols before them. Those solely wishing to observe can enjoy daily live music in the club, from mid-afternoon until late evening. Visitors wishing to explore the city of Liverpool and The Beatles Story can book the Magical Mystery Tour trip. The tour explores the history, music and places which inspired songs such as Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, finally concluding in the Cavern Club.
The Cavern Club is in the heart of Liverpool City Centre. It’s an easy venue to walk to from Moorfields, Central and Lime Street Rail Stations in less than 10 minutes. The city’s main shopping complex, Liverpool ONE is also five minutes away. Buses operate along Victoria Street, Cook Street and Lord Streets, all close by. Taxis and Uber services are readily available.
The original Cavern Club opened in 1957, and during the 1960s quickly became the centre of the rock and roll scene in Liverpool. The Beatles first played the club after a stint in Hamburg, Germany where they were receiving rave reviews. The Cavern Club stage graced many of the leading bands of the 60s and 70s, and even today has world famous artists vying to play the stage. In recent years, Adele, Oasis and Jessie J have all played sets at the Cavern Club.
