Known for its untouched medina and vibrant art community, Tetouan is an important 8th-century Mediterranean city. Just two kilometres from the ocean, Tetouan’s multi-ethnic history is steeped in its food, art, culture and architecture.
Things to do in Tétouan
With idyllic white-walled homes that rest on the foot of the Rif Mountains, Tetouan exudes Moroccan charm. This is especially evident on Mohammed V Avenue, a pedestrian road in the heart of the city. Filled with bookstores, street vendors and aromatic restaurants, Mohammed V bustles with locals in the evening.
A Heritage-listed site, The Medina of Tetouan teaches you about the multicultural history of northern Morocco. Stroll through its narrow 17th-century alleys and browse colourful market stalls or hire a guide to learn more about Tetouan’s rich history.
Discover Tetouan’s art scene by exploring the Tetouan Museum of Modern Art, one of two modern art museums in Morocco. Set inside a renovated railway station, the museum houses an eclectic range of North-African artwork and hosts a variety of guest exhibitions throughout the year.
A visit to Tetouan wouldn’t be complete without a day in the Rif Mountains. Take a guided tour through the forest with Barbary Macaque Awareness and Conservation and admire the city below from various vantage points. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to observe macaques in the canopy above, with each tour offering a unique perspective of Morocco’s local wildlife.
