Visit the museums of Tangier. Overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is an important port city that serves as a gateway between Africa and Europe. Visit the Tangier American Legation Museum, which details relations between Morocco and the United States, and take a step back in time at Dar el Makhzen. Once a palace for the sultans, this stunning museum exhibits handwoven carpets, decorated firearms and antiques. Occupying the old kitchen is the Museum of Antiquities where ancient findings are on display.
Explore the blue town of Chefchaouen. Nestled in the Rif Mountains, photogenic Chefchaouen is clustered with buildings in all shades of blue. At its heart is the bustling main square of Place Outa el Hammam, which is watched over by a 15th-century fortress and fringed by restaurants serving authentic Moroccan cuisine. Gaze up at the octagonal minaret of the historic Grand Mosque before getting lost in the town’s cobblestone streets.
Explore Talassemtane National Park. Protecting one of Morocco’s last-remaining fir forests, Talassemtane National Park is home to several endemic and endangered plant species that include Atlas cedar and Andalusian belladonna. Stretch your legs along one of the hiking trails that lead to the Bridge of God and the idyllic Cascades d'Akchour while keeping your eyes peeled for bearded vultures.
Getting around Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima
Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport is the main aviation gateway to Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and has flights to destinations across Morocco and Europe. Trains connect from Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakesh to the Tanger-Ville railway station while buses travel to towns and villages throughout the region. Grands taxis are also readily available for getting around.
