Things to do in Sakākā
The ancient city of Dumat Al Jandal is an easy day trip from Sakakah. The city was founded in the 10th century and is anchored by Marid Castle, a military stronghold perched on a rocky plateau. Stroll around the base of the castle and get up close with the imposing walls built from mud and stone. The evocative Al Dar’i Quarter is laced with narrow stone alleys.
Also known as the Stonehenge of Arabia, the Columns of Rajajil recall the province’s ancient past. More than 50 carved sandstone monoliths dot the archaeological site and mark the graves of Arabians buried in the 5th and 6th centuries.
Just north of Sakaka is Zaabal Castle, an imposing stronghold with sweeping views over the city. The castle was built to protect a natural well that has been supplying the city with water for hundreds of years. Peer into the mud houses at the base of the castle, then follow the path up to the ramparts to take in the views.
Sakaka at Al Khunfah Natural Reserve is home to mountain gazelles, lappet-faced vultures, turtles and a cast of other wildlife. Guided tours are the best way to explore this protected reserve managed by the Saudi Wildlife Authority.
