Things to do in Pula City Centre
Built in the 1st century, the Roman Amphitheatre soars over the Old Town. Locally quarried limestone was used to construct the arena, which once hosted gladiator contests and chariot races. Today it’s reimagined as an atmospheric venue for outdoor concerts, festivals, film screenings and Roman-inspired shows. Admire the amphitheatre from the street or purchase a ticket to explore underground chambers where animals like bears, tigers and elephants were penned.
See sharks, rays, turtles and more at Pula Aquarium. Architects have done an incredible job of transforming the 19th-century military fort into a world-class aquarium. Tanks brim with everything from anemones, starfish and seahorses to blacktip reef sharks and colourful clown fish.
Watch the sunset over the harbour, then make a beeline for Lighting Giants. The mesmerising lights show unfolds every night in the Uljanik Shipyard and sees the enormous cranes illuminated in a rainbow of colours.
Climb up to the city’s star-shaped fortress and visit the Istria Historical & Maritime Museum. Exhibits cover a variety of topics, including the Italian fascist period and the Nazi regime. The fortress is perched on a hilltop and commands spectacular views over Pula City Centre and the sparkling Adriatic Sea.
Local buses make it easy to beach-hop on the Verudela Peninsula. Relax on white-pebble beaches framed by towering pine trees and swim in the Adriatic Sea. Cafes dot the waterfront and serve excellent seafood.
