Things to do in New Territories
Step back in time in Lai Chi Wo, an ancient walled village in Hong Kong Global Geopark. Hundreds of traditional houses dot the village and offer a fascinating glimpse of the Hakka ethnic group. Relax under the shade of a towering banyan tree in the main square and explore the lush mangrove forests that surround the village. Guided tours are the best way to visit Lai Chi Wo.
The lively town of Yuen Long is a gateway to the wildlife-rich Mai Po Nature Reserve. Start early for the best chance to spot rare species like the black-faced spoonbill. The wetlands are also home to endangered Eurasian otters. Hong Kong Wetland Park is an excellent alternative with scenic trails, bird hides and an engaging visitor centre.
Admire centuries-old Tang structures on the Ping Shan Heritage Trail. The short trail winds through the heart of Yuen Long and takes you past one of the oldest pagodas in Hong Kong. You can find out more about the legacy of the Tang clan at the Ping Shan Tang Clan Gallery.
Be amazed by enormous, hexagonal rock columns in High Island Reservoir East Dam. Formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago, the columns are a natural wonder. Some are more than 100 metres tall. The site also features a cobalt-blue dam separated from the South China Sea by a vast wall of anchor-shaped concrete blocks.
From Michelin-starred restaurants to hole-in-the-wall noodle houses, the New Territories offers a huge variety of dining experiences. Dig into plates piled high with roasted duck and enjoy fresh fish caught in the South China Sea. Dishes like salt-baked chicken, braised pork belly and beef meatball soup showcase the region’s Hakka culture.
