Fancy a day at the races? Head down to Moonee Valley Racecourse, the home of Australia’s most prestigious horse racing event, the Ladbrokes Cox Plate Carnival. This event takes place in October every year, with feature races described as the “best two minutes in sport”. However, it isn’t the only reason to visit the historic racing club, which also hosts the Sunline Stakes in March, the JRA Cup in September and the Ian McEwen Trophy in August.
Considered Melbourne’s best racecourse for spectators, Moonee Valley Racecourse boasts a unique amphitheatre track that brings you close to the action. There are also events held throughout the year, including family days, conferences and memorial services.
Heading to the Cox Plate? Add a little extra to the racing action with a ladies’ luncheon, intimate evening with Cox Plate legends or breakfast at the exciting barrier draw. If you haven’t had enough racing action, head to Flemington Racecourse, home of the Melbourne Cup. More than 320 animal species can also be seen nearby at Melbourne Zoo.
Getting there
You can catch the train to Moonee Ponds Station, which is about a 10-minute walk away, or take the tram to Moonee Ponds Junction, about 200 metres away. There’s also a convenient taxi rank and free public parking if you want to drive.
