Overlooking the Thermaic Gulf in northern Greece, Makrygialos is a coastal village on the doorstep of Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas National Park. It’s home to a fascinating archaeological museum and is renowned for its locally farmed mussels, which are celebrated during an annual seafood festival.
Things to do in Makrygialos
Showcasing archaeological findings from across Pieria is the Visitable Museum Store of Makrygialos, which occupies a warehouse in the heart of town. In addition to ceramic vessels dating from the Iron Age and amphorae excavated at the ancient ruins of Pydna, it features exhibits detailing the process of conserving, storing and displaying ancient objects.
Stretching along the length of the town is Makrygialos Beach, where you can enjoy a swim in the warm waters of the Aegean Sea. A string of tavernas serving authentic Greek fare back the sand, with several offering sun loungers and umbrellas for rent. Further south is the Kitros Salt Pit, which is renowned for its therapeutic mud and a popular spot for birdwatching.
Makrygialos makes an ideal base for exploring Axios-Loudias-Aliakmonas National Park, a protected tract of lagoons, marshes and wetlands that’s known for its high biodiversity. You can soak up the panoramic views from the observation tower at Nea Agathoupoli and stretch your legs on one of the walking trails. Keep your eyes peeled for European ground squirrels, otters and wild horses. During the winter, you may be lucky enough to see flamingos alongside water birds that include avocets, ibises and herons.
