Once owned by Mount Athos’ Vatopedi Monastery, Ammouliani is the only inhabited island in the Greek region of Halkidiki. It was given to families migrating from the Sea of Marmara islands following the Greco-Turkish War. With its sun-drenched beaches and laid-back lifestyle, Ammouliani has since become a popular tourist resort.
Things to do in Ammouliani
Ammouliani is fringed by stunning beaches, most of which are ideal for swimming due to their calm, shallow waters. Enjoy the peace and quiet of Karagatsi Beach or head to Alykes, where you’ll find a handful of beach bars. Magnificent views of the mainland can be enjoyed from the sands of Agios Georgios, which has sun beds and beach umbrellas for rent.
Spectacular views of the monasteries of Mount Athos can be enjoyed during a boat cruise through the Singitic Gulf, which separates Sithonia from the monastic community. Admire the whitewashed Monastery of St. Peter and the Monastery of St. Gregory, which is perched atop the rocky coastline. Further south is the community of New Skete, which is renowned for its olive groves and painted icons.
Just off the coast of Ammouliani is the archipelago of Drenia, where you’ll find untouched beaches and outstanding snorkelling. Known locally as the “Gaidouronisia" or "Donkey Islands”, it is said that locals once buried their donkeys here. Rent a boat or kayak to spend a day exploring the rugged coastlines or relax at the most remote beach bar in Halkidiki.
