Once forming part of Rancho Sausal Redondo, Lawndale is a residential city in Los Angeles’ south-west. When it was subdivided in 1905, it was named after a Chicago neighbourhood and flourished in the post-World War II years as a bedroom community.
Things to do in Lawndale
On the southeastern edge of Lawndale is Alondra Park, a large, wooded recreational area that encompasses a picturesque lake. It attracts a variety of migratory wetland and upland birds, as well as a colourful array of native butterflies. You can explore along one of the scenic walking trails, take advantage of the Alondra Skate Park or cool off at the kid-friendly splash pad.
Adjacent is the 18-hole Alondra Golf Course, which features small, elevated greens for practising your short-range game. You can improve your swing on the driving range or book a lesson with one of the resident pros for some one-on-one instruction. Also on-site is a well-stocked pro shop and a snack bar where you can grab drinks and light bites.
A short drive south of Lawndale is the South Bay Galleria, a sprawling shopping mall that originally opened in 1959. It’s home to department stores such as Macy’s and Target, as well as a multi-screen cinema complex and a diverse choice of eateries. Also within the complex is the Wonder of Dinosaurs, a family-friendly attraction with the largest display of dinosaurs on the West Coast of the United States.
