Lanyu Township is a slice of paradise marooned in the Philippine Sea. Most of the township is located on Orchid Island, where you’ll find rocky beaches, turquoise bays and jungle-covered mountains. Explore the dramatic volcanic landscapes and immerse yourself in the rich cultures and traditions of the indigenous Tao people.
Things to do in Lanyu
While the beaches on Orchid Island have strong currents and aren’t ideal for swimming, you can cool off in postcard-perfect tidepools. Some of the largest pools are suitable for snorkelling and are filled with colourful corals and clownfish. Yeyin Cold Spring is another great swimming spot. It features a mix of fresh and saltwater and treats you to stunning views over the Philippine Sea. Scuba tours take you offshore to some of the best dive sites in Taiwan.
Hiking is one of the best ways to enjoy the natural beauty of Lanyu Township. The three-hour return hike to Big Heaven Pool rewards you with fantastic views over the island. As you hike, look out for the colourful orchids and butterflies the island is famous for.
The Lanyu Flying Fish Cultural Museum features exhibits on the indigenous Tao people, who have lived on the island for more than 800 years. Learn about the unique underground homes and the beautiful hand-carved wooden canoes. You’ll also be introduced to the island’s famous flying fish industry. Most restaurants serve the local delicacy, which you can enjoy fried, battered or served with traditional Taiwanese “dan bing” crepes.
