Previously known as El Toro, Lake Forest lies in the scenic Saddleback Valley on the southeastern outskirts of Los Angeles. The city takes its name from two manmade lakes, as well as the eucalyptus forest planted here by Dwight Whiting in the early 20th century.
Things to do in Lake Forest
Lake Forest’s past is brought to life at Heritage Hill Historic Park, which encompasses four restored buildings that have been furnished as they would have appeared during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Join a guided tour to learn about the Mexican Rancho era and the founding of El Toro, as well as the days when citrus farming dominated the Saddleback Valley.
Keen golfers can visit the Lake Forest Golf and Practice Center, which features a 9-hole course surrounded by orange groves. With its soft sand bunkers and two lakes, it’s the perfect course for golfers to develop their skills while enjoying views of the Saddleback Mountains. In addition to the five-bunker chipping area, private lessons are available for reaching your personal goals.
Dominating the north of Lake Forest is Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park, which encompasses spectacular canyons and rock formations traversed by hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails. You can explore the oak tree-studded Borrego Canyon or admire the ochre sandstone cliffs of Red Rock Canyon before soaking up the views across Orange County from the Vista Lookout.
