Things to do in Kuching City Centre
Watch orangutans swing through the trees at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre. A working research and rehabilitation sanctuary, it’s one of the best places in Borneo to see wild orangutans. Dozens of the great apes arrive to feast on fruit supplied by rangers. From adorable babies to dominant males, there’s a chance to see all kinds of family groups at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre.
Learn about the legacy of former British leader Charles Brooke at Fort Margherit. The hilltop stronghold was built in the 19th century to defend the city from pirate raids. Within the fortress is the Brooke Gallery, where you can learn more about the White Rajahs who ruled Sarawak for more than 100 years.
A tree-lined promenade stretches along the southern bank of the Sarawak River. It’s a lovely place to enjoy an evening stroll and watch the sunset. Food stalls dot the promenade and serve Malaysian favourites like “lok lok” prawn skewers and spicy laksa. Alternatively, board a riverboat and enjoy a sunset cruise along the Sarawak.
Admire hand-painted ceramics, ornate furniture and colourful dragon costumes at the Chinese History Museum. The museum celebrates the city’s Chinese heritage and boasts a beautiful setting on the Sarawak River.
Getting around Kuching City Centre
Kuching City Centre is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Taxis are a fast and affordable way to cover longer distances, or you can use local buses. Small ferries called “tambangs” sail along the Sarawak River. Kuching International Airport is a 25-minute drive from the city centre.
