Once the most important border crossing between Denmark and Germany, Kruså sprawls along the southwestern shore of the Flensborg Fjord. It was here that German troops crossed the border during the early days of World War II to begin their invasion of Denmark.
One of Kruså's most striking architectural landmarks is the whitewashed Kollund Kirke, which is unique in its cubist form. It’s located a stone’s throw from the Kollund Strand, where you can swim and sunbathe in the Flensborg Fjord. Also nearby is the Gendarmstein coastal walking trail, which extends for 84 kilometres along the Danish-German border.
Kruså makes an ideal base for visiting the Mekanisk Museum Sønderjylland, which boasts an impressive collection of vintage tractors, trucks and agricultural machinery. Chat with the owner about the antique bicycles, carriages and mopeds that are on display, alongside quintessential Danish artefacts such as clogs.
