Established as recently as 2007, Southern Denmark is the westernmost of Denmark’s administrative regions. While its capital is Vejle, Odense is the region’s largest city and Esbjerg serves as a major seaport on the North Sea coast. In addition to its scenic countryside and historic towns, Southern Denmark is home to one of the country’s most visited attractions, Legoland Billund.
Things to do in South Denmark
Whether you’re into culture, history or family fun, Southern Denmark has something for everyone.
Sightsee in Odense. The largest city on Funen Island, Odense is a cultural hub and the birthplace of Hans Christian Anderson. You can learn about the fairytale author’s life and legacy at the Hans Christian Anderson Museum and visit his half-timbered Childhood Home. Kids will love Odense Zoo, which is home to lions, giraffes and lemurs, while artists’ studios and galleries cluster in the former textile factory of Brandts Klædefabrik.
Visit Egeskov Slot. Constructed in 1554, Egeskov Slot is one of Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance water castles and appears beautifully reflected in its surrounding lake. Admire its conical towers (complete with arrow slits) before seeing the massive iron chest, oil paintings and vintage vehicles on display inside. In the castle park, you’ll find hedge mazes and a Piet Hein-designed sundial, as well as a fuchsia garden containing more than 100 different species.
Explore Legoland Billund. Built adjacent to the original Lego factory, this family-friendly amusement park was the first Legoland anywhere in the world. It is designed around 10 themed areas, including Adventure Land and the Imagination Zone with its 4D cinema. At Mini Land, you can see 1:20 scale Lego brick models of famous Danish landmarks before experiencing the dark ride of Ninjago World. Elevated views across the park are available from the LEGOTop.
