Located in the heart of Denmark, Odense is one of the country’s most beautiful cities, renowned for its rich culture. It’s easy to compare Odense’s cobblestoned streets and the works of the city’s famous former resident, fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen.
Things to do in Odense
One of the best things to do in Odense is to simply spend the afternoon strolling through the old city’s quaint streets, gazing at the intricate architecture. At night, the area comes alive with a vibrant cafe and bar culture as Odense’s younger residents fill its streets.
Not far is Brandt’s art gallery, generally considered to be the best in all of Denmark, which features a range of Danish art, from classic and modern artwork to abstract photography. Take a wander around the gallery and you’ll also notice some stellar street art plastered on walls and buildings.
You’d be amiss not visiting the HC Andersen’s Hus museum, housed in the former home of author Hans Christian Andersen, best known for “The Little Mermaid”, “Thumbelina” and “The Ugly Duckling”. Learn about the man’s extraordinary life while exploring where he lived and worked.
Considered Denmark’s finest zoo, Odense Zoo dates back to 1930. What really separates it from the pack is the Oceanium feature, a hands-on tour through the rainforests of South America
Getting Around
Odense is perfectly sized for getting around almost exclusively by foot. A direct train connects Odense to Copenhagen Airport, taking around two hours. There are also city buses, which regularly depart Odense Bytrafik and service the city and surrounding suburbs.
