Located where the Lanyang and Dongshan rivers meet the Philippine Sea, Wujie Township is a rural area in Yilan County. It’s home to several industrial relics that were transformed into cultural destinations, as well as a picturesque park that pays homage to the area’s natural landscape.
Things to do in Wujie Township
One of Wujie Township’s most popular attractions is the Dongshan River Water Park, which was designed as a place where urban dwellers could reconnect with the natural world. It incorporates the cultural beliefs of the Lanyang Plains, with conical stone towers built from pebbles and undulations to simulate the scales of a dragon. In addition to hosting outdoor stage shows, the park is an idyllic setting for rowing and swimming in the summer months.
If you’re interested in Taiwan’s agricultural history, visit the Erjie Rice Barn, which was established in 1928 under Japanese colonial rule. It was once used for the storage and milling of rice and has been lovingly preserved as a cultural landmark. Browse the vintage agricultural tools and equipment on display and marvel at the three-storey-high rice huller.
Another industrial site that’s been given a new lease on life is the paper manufacturing complex of the Chung Hsing Cultural and Creative Park. As you stroll around the site, either individually or on a heritage tour, you can learn about the newsprint, banknotes and toilet paper that were once produced here. Art exhibitions, live concerts and handicraft markets are also on the annual calendar.
