Things to do in Insa-dong
Pedestrianised Insadong-gil cuts through the heart of the neighbourhood and is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. Enjoy a cup of “maesil-cha” plum tea at a traditional teahouse and sit down for fried chicken, rice cakes and spicy kimchi at an authentic Korean eatery.
The colourful shopfronts strung along Insadong-gil will lure you in with its painted pottery, porcelain and stacks of handmade “hanji” paper. Venture down the narrow alleyways that branch off Insadong-gil to discover more eclectic cafes, shops and eateries.
The trendy Ssamziegil complex features four floors of art galleries, studios and workshops set around an open-air courtyard. Expect to find everything from modern art to traditional Korean crafts. Climb the stairs to the rooftop garden for sweeping views over the neighbourhood.
Insa-dong is home to more than 100 galleries, ranging from small independent studios to world-class spaces. Hakgojae Gallery is one of the best and showcases works by contemporary Korean artists. If you love kimchi, don’t miss the novel Museum Kimchikan dedicated to the famous Korean dish.
Set in the shadow of glass-and-steel skyscrapers, Jogyesa Temple is a serene sanctuary in the heart of Seoul. The ancient Buddhist temple was founded in the 14th century and is set in beautiful gardens. Peer inside to admire a trio of enormous golden Buddhas.
Getting around Insa-dong
Insa-dong is easy to get around on foot, especially along pedestrianised Insadong-gil and the surrounding alleys. Access the neighbourhood via Anguk Station on Line 3 of the Seoul Subway. Jonggak Station on Line 1 is a 10-minute walk from Insa-dong. Incheon International Airport is a one-hour drive away.
