Fukuoka Tower soars 234 metres over the Momochihama district and is considered a city landmark. Its mirrored glass facade and sleek, triangular design have earned it the nickname of “Mirror Sail”. The tower was built to celebrate Fukuoka's 100th anniversary and is one of Japan's tallest buildings.
The 123-metre-high observation deck commands 360-degree views over the city skyline and Hakata Bay. After soaking in the views, enjoy green tea and Japanese sponge cake in the cafe. Sunset is the most popular time to visit, when the water acquires a golden glow. On special occasions, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and the Star Festival, the tower is illuminated in colourful lights.
At the foot of the tower is Momochihama Seaside Park, a one-kilometre-long stretch of golden sand fringed by a breezy promenade. Stroll through the tree-lined paths and walk out to Marizon, an artificial island with shops, bars and restaurants.
Getting there
Fukuoka Tower is set on the Hakata Bay waterfront. It’s a 20-minute walk from Nishijin Station, while local buses stop near the tower entrance.
