One of Fukuoka’s seven wards, Chuo-ku lies in the heart of the city, overlooking a bustling port. Its vibrant streets are lined with traditional bars, casual eateries and old-world temples, while the ward’s abundant green spaces are home to family-friendly attractions and ancient castle ruins.
Things to do in Chūō-ku
Art enthusiasts can visit the Fukuoka Art Museum, which boasts an impressive collection of Asian artworks and hosts changing exhibitions throughout the year. It’s located on the edge of Ohori Park, a scenic green space with a sprawling lake, boat rentals and waterfront walking trails. On the banks of the Naka River is the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Arts, which focuses on the work of local artists.
On the eastern edge of Ohori Park lie the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, which was constructed in the 17th century for Kuroda Nagamasa. Several of its yagura towers remain, together with the only korokan (diplomat guesthouse) to survive in Japan. Surrounding the historic site are the recreational facilities of Maizuru Park, including the Heiwadai Athletic Stadium and the Maizuru Park Baseball Field.
South of Chuo Ward is the Fukuoka City Botanical Garden, which is home to landscaped flower beds and a greenhouse where orchids, ferns and cacti are grown. Adjacent is the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo, where you can get up close to more than 700 animals, including leopards, hippos and black bears. Young children will love the miniature Ferris wheel, train and merry-go-round.
Getting around Chūō-ku
Fukuoka Airport is around 20 minutes’ drive from Chuo Ward and has flights to destinations across Asia. Subway trains connect to stations located throughout Chuo Ward while buses also serve the area. Many of Chuo Ward’s attractions can easily be accessed on foot.
