Fouras is a sunny seaside town perched on the Bay of Biscay. The town is set on the Charente-Maritime coast and combines all the comforts of a modern resort with history, culture and lashings of French charm. Relax on gold-sand beaches, explore centuries-old forts and enjoy ocean-fresh seafood.
Things to do in Fouras
The beaches in Fouras are stunning, with soft sand, gently rolling waves and beautiful views over the Bay of Biscay. Grande Plage has a lively atmosphere and is patrolled by lifeguards in the summer. It’s sheltered from the wind and fringed by a breezy promenade lined with colourful townhouses. For a quieter scene, head to Plage Sud on the other side of Fort de Fouras. Further up the peninsula is Plage Nord, an uncrowded stretch of sand popular with windsurfers.
Fort de Fouras has been towering over the beach since the 11th century and recalls the town’s medieval past. The Town Museum is housed within the fort and features exhibits on local history and folk art. Climb the main tower for sweeping views over the town centre and Grande Plage. Boat tours get you up close with Fort Boyard, an evocative 17th-century fortress marooned in the Bay of Biscay.
Cafes and bistros spill out onto the sidewalks of the town centre, many housed in elegant Belle Epoque villas. You’ll find some of the best seafood restaurants clustered around the tip of the peninsula. The Charente-Maritime is famous for shellfish, including clams, cockles, scallops and periwinkles.
