Encompassing the runways and terminal buildings of Bordeaux International Airport, Merignac is a sprawling commune to the west of Bordeaux’s city centre. It was the birthplace of 20th-century French historian Robert Étienne and is home to the lakeside chateau of Parc de Bourran.
Things to do in Mérignac
One of Merignac’s most famous landmarks is Parc de Bourran, which centres around a centuries-old chateau once belonging to François-Armand de Saige. Surrounded by vineyards, it was purchased by the shipowner Emile Ravesies at the end of the 19th century and was rebuilt by Jules and Paul Lafargue. Wander through its picturesque gardens traversed by the Deveze River or let kids loose in the children’s playground.
Want to learn about the future of winemaking in France? Head to the Château Luchey-Halde, which is one of the most reputable vineyards in Merignac. It’s now operated by the National School of Agronomic Sciences who draw on the latest technology in their practices. Join a guided tour to learn about the Pessac-Leognan appellation and the chateau’s innovative winemaking processes, from grape harvesting to bottling.
Dating back to the 12th-century, the Old St. Vincent Church has been transformed into an exhibition space where changing displays of paintings, photography and sculptural works are showcased. It’s located in the heart of Merignac and just a short stroll from its successor, St. Vincent Church. Inaugurated in 1865, this “new” church dominates the Place Charles de Gaulle and houses an organ designed by the Bordeaux-based Wenner builders.
