Things to do in Deidesheim
From iconic producers to small-batch boutique estates, the Pfalz wine region bottles some of Germany’s best Rieslings. The warm climate, easterly aspect and sheltered setting in the foothills of the Haardt mountains give the wines a distinct richness and full-bodied flavour.
The Deutsche Weinstrasse, also known as the German Wine Route, runs through the town centre and is dotted with postcard-perfect vineyards. Most wineries welcome visitors with elegant tasting rooms. Some also offer fine-dining restaurants with vineyard views.
Deidesheim offers a variety of dining options, ranging from Michelin-starred restaurants to family-run taverns. Menus spotlight fresh, locally grown ingredients like almonds, figs and citrus fruits. You’ll also see traditional dishes from the Rhineland-Palatinate region like “saumagen” stuffed pig stomach seasoned with marjoram and pheasant cooked in wine. Of course, meals should always be paired with a glass of Riesling.
The Museum of Wine Culture occupies the 16th-century town hall. Inside you can discover three storeys of exhibits on the rich history of viticulture in the Pfalz wine region. You’ll learn about early Riesling pioneers, as well as modern winemaking innovators.
