Things to do in Bernkastel-Kues
Bernkastel-Kues boasts one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany. Strolling along the cobbled streets, you’ll see rows of beautifully restored half-timbered houses. Many have been reimagined as atmospheric cafes, bakeries and delicatessens.
Spitzhäuschen, also known as the Pointed House, is one of the oldest. Reminiscent of a gingerbread house, it was built in the 1400s and features a distinct triangle-shaped roof. On the ground floor is a cosy wine bar where you can stop for a glass of Riesling.
Bernkastel-Kues is set in the heart of the famous Mosel wine-growing region. The town is bliss for wine lovers and is a great launchpad for touring the region. While the Mosel Valley is famous for its palate-tingling Riesling, you’ll also see Pinot Blanc, Elbling and Kerner.
Scenic cruises along the Mosel River are a great way to spend a few hours in Bernkastel-Kues. As you cruise along the Mosel, you’ll pass by lush vineyards and rolling farmland. Hiking up to hilltop Landshut Castle also treats you to sweeping views over the countryside. Quench your thirst with a pint in the sun-drenched beer garden.
Getting around Bernkastel-Kues
Bernkastel-Kues is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, with bridges crossing the River Mosel and linking the twin towns. Frankfurt and Frankfurt Airport are a two-hour drive away. The closest train station is in Wittlich, 20-kilometres from Bernkastel-Kues.
