The word “brea” can be translated to “oil” in Spanish and is representative of how the city attained its name, with origins in oil production dating back to the 1800s. Over time, Brea’s predominant relationship with oil translated to one with citrus, as agricultural production of lemons and oranges soon took control of the economy.
