Colourful souvenir stands and open-air restaurants line Playa Bayahibe. Sunbathe on the soft sand and cool off in water that is so clear you’ll see fish darting past. Just south is Dominicus Beach, a ribbon of sugar-white sand backed by luxury hotels. Splurge on a day pass to stretch out on a sunlounger and sip cocktails by the pool.
Explore coral-strewn shipwrecks with local dive schools in Bayahibe. Take your pick of three amazing wrecks, including the Atlantic Princess. At just 12 metres below the surface, the wreck teems with marine life. The waters around Bayahibe are home to enormous manta rays, barracudas and sea turtles. If you’re not an experienced diver, try activities like kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling near technicolour coral reefs.
Board a catamaran and sail to postcard-perfect Isla Saona. Boats depart from Playa Bayahibe and whisk you to the uninhabited island, which is set in a protected marine park. Palm trees line the beaches and offer respite from the Caribbean sun. Local vendors stroll along the beach and sell handmade jewellery and other trinkets, while local restaurants serve ice-cold rum punch and sumptuous buffet lunches. Most tours include a stop at Piscina Natural, a shallow sandbar surrounded by translucent water.
Getting around Bayahibe
Bayahibe is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Taxis are a fast and affordable way to get around the resort. Bayahibe is a 25-minute drive from La Romana and two hours from Santo Domingo. La Romana International Airport is a 25-minute drive away.
