Sugar-white sand, crystalline water and coral reefs teeming with marine life make Sosua one of the most rewarding destinations in the Dominican Republic. The Caribbean beach town is lively yet laid-back, with brightly-painted buildings and restaurants where you can devour seafood, sip cocktails and melt into holiday mode.
Things to do in Sosúa
Crescent-shaped Playa Sosua is a hive of activity during the day and attracts a mix of tourists and locals. The beach is lined with palm trees and features calm, crystal-clear water. Bask on the beach, cool off in the Caribbean Sea and rent snorkel gear to explore the rainbow-coloured reef. Stalls line the foreshore and sell everything from fresh coconuts to handmade souvenirs.
Sosua is a launchpad to the spectacular reefs and dive sites located off the north coast of the Dominican Republic. There are dive sites for every level, from beginner-friendly coral gardens and rock walls to wrecks and caves suitable for experienced divers. There’s a good chance to spot manta rays, spotted eagle rays, turtles, moray eels and other marine life.
Museo de la Comunidad Judía de Sosúa charts the town’s history as a sanctuary for Jewish residents fleeing Nazi Germany. You can learn about how the Dominican Republic offered a warm welcome to the refugees, who helped establish the island’s flourishing dairy and cattle-ranching industries.
Buggy tours are a fun way to explore the island’s lush interior. Strap in and zoom past sugarcane fields and dairy farms. If you’d rather spend the day on the water, catamaran tours combine swimming, snorkelling and spectacular sunsets.
Getting around Sosúa
Sosua is compact and easy to get around on foot. Taxis are available or you can hail “motoconcho” motorcycle taxis. Local minibuses known as “guaguas” are a fast and affordable way to get around the island. Gregorio Luperón International Airport is a 10-minute drive away.
