Samana is a sun-drenched town fringed by gleaming white sand and lush palms. It’s perched on a picturesque peninsula and combines beautiful beaches with a vibrant Caribbean culture. A lively waterfront promenade lined with cafes, bars and restaurants adds to the upbeat atmosphere.
Things to do in Samaná
Relax and enjoy the sunshine on some of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic. Framed by coconut palms, Playa Rincon entices sunseekers with powder-white sand and turquoise water. For a more secluded experience head to Playa Fronton, a remote beach accessible only by boat. Rugged cliffs flank the beach and form a dramatic backdrop.
Work up a sweat on the hike to El Limón Waterfall, then cool off in the natural pool at the base of the falls. The waterfall is hidden in the rainforest and surrounded by lush tropical greenery. Horseback rides are another popular way to access the falls.
From January to March, the sheltered waters of Samana Bay become a sanctuary for thousands of migrating humpback whales. Join a boat tour to get up close with the majestic marine mammals and see unique behaviours like breaching and tail-slapping. Visit the family-friendly Whale Museum to learn more about the animals and see an enormous humpback skeleton.
Escape to Cayo Levantado, a small island marooned in Samana Bay. Catamarans sail to the postcard-perfect island, where you can bask on palm-lined beaches, snorkel in crystalline water and enjoy sumptuous seafood buffets.
