Extending in a narrow stretch from Bali’s central highlands in the north to the Nusa Dua Peninsula in the south, the regency of Badung is small but mighty. It’s home to some of Indonesia’s most coveted tourist hotspots, including iconic Kuta Beach, as well as Jimbaran Bay and the famous Nusa Dua resort area on the eastern tip.
Sheltered by a coral reef, Nusa Dua’s beach is fantastic for swimming and snorkelling. It’s also home to a constellation of 5-star resorts. Kuta is notorious for its party scene, though despite its crowds there’s no denying that it still boasts one of Bali’s most beautiful beaches. Known for long rolling waves, the Bukit Badung Peninsula is eternally popular with surfers, while stylish resorts like Seminyak attract holidaymakers in search of a luxe experience.
All tourist areas within the regency of Badung are easy to reach from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. The drive to resorts located on the Nusa Dua Peninsula is a little shorter than to places like Kuta and Seminyak. Within resort districts, most travellers choose to get around by foot, though taxis and private drivers are also popular for those wanting to explore more far-flung destinations like Ubud.
Beyond resorts, the regency of Badung is brimming with history. The impressive Garuda Wisnu Kencana towers 145-metres above an ancient quarry, while the majestic 11th century Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is perched on the regency’s western tip. Meticulously carved from coral stone, it is one of Bali’s most exquisite architectural feats.
