Often referred to as “the loveliest seaside resort in the Netherlands”, Zoutelande is a picturesque town overlooking the North Sea on the former island of Walcheren. It was originally settled as an agricultural village, with its beautiful beach, water reflections and brilliant sky attracting many Dutch painters and holidaymakers in the mid-19th century.
Stroll through the charming streets of Zoutelande to admire the 1722 brick-built corn mill and the 13th-century tower of Catharinakerk. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can dine throughout the day, with many serving Zeeland specialties such as oysters, mussels and lobsters.
Pay a visit to the Zoutelande Bunker Museum, which encompasses two German-built bunkers dating back to World War II. Learn about the construction of the Atlantic Wall as you explore the bunkers, one of which has been recreated with period furnishings and decorations that illustrate how the soldiers would have lived.
Getting there
Antwerp International Airport is just over an hour’s drive from Zoutelande and has flights to destinations across Europe. Trains connect from Antwerp to the Middleburg railway station, from where buses travel to Zoutelande. The village centre is small enough to explore on foot.
