About Wonthaggi

From its fascinating State Coal Mine to its dramatic coastal seascapes, Wonthaggi is a small town in Victoria's Bass Coast region. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the picturesque scenery, from exploring Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park to cycling the Bass Coast Rail Trail.

Things to do in Wonthaggi

For history buffs, Wonthaggi offers a unique opportunity to discover Victoria's mining history. The town was built to support the local coal industry, with "black gold" attracting workers from across Australia. Today visitors can explore historic buildings, scenic trails and learn more about the industry through interpretive displays at the decommissioned State Coal Mine.

Just a few kilometres up the coast is the historic town of Kilcunda. It's dominated by the heritage listed Kilcunda Bridge, which spans 90 metres across Bourne Creek. The wooden trestle bridge is part of the Bass Coast Rail Trail cycling route and offers sweeping views of sandy Kilcunda Beach and the turquoise Bass Strait.

With five kilometres of coastline to explore, Bunurong Marine and Coastal Park is laced with sandy coves, rolling dunes and rugged sandstone cliffs. Flat Rocks is a great beach for families, with shallow rock pools brimming with colourful starfish. Visit from May to October to spot whales frolicking off the coast.

For a glimpse at local talent, visit the ArtSpace Wonthaggi Community Gallery, located in the heart of the town. It showcases work from regional artists, from Indigenous oil paintings to artisan jewellery, and is a great place to pick up unique souvenirs.
