Encompassing the western part of Greater London, this extensive district lies north of the River Thames and roughly corresponds to the historic county of Middlesex. It grew rapidly in the Victorian era following the establishment of the railways, which enabled commuters to easily travel to London for work. West London includes one of the world’s biggest transportation hubs, Heathrow Airport.
Things to do in West London
Straddling Ealing and Hounslow is Osterley Park and House, a Georgian country estate now managed by the National Trust. Originally built in the 1570s, the property was redesigned by the Neoclassical architect Robert Adam in the 1760s. After touring the luxurious state apartments, be sure to explore the ornamental vegetable beds and roses of the formal gardens.
Travelling with kids? Spend a day at Hanwell Zoo, a family-friendly attraction in Brent Lodge Park. You can get up close to goats, meerkats and capybaras, as well as magnificent peacocks and flamingos. The zoo also boasts a children’s play area, a laid-back cafe and the Millennium Maze, which was created more than 2,000 yews.
In addition to its facility in Covent Garden, the London Transport Museum holds much of its collection at the Museum Depot at Acton. Coincide your visit with one of its open weekend days to browse the vintage vehicles, uniforms and posters on display or join a guided tour with one of the knowledgeable staff. A highlight is the London Transport Miniature Railway, which recreates a section of the London Underground.
