Nestled on the southern shore of Lake Chiemsee, Übersee is a popular holiday destination in the Bavarian district of Traunstein. Before World War II, it was predominantly an agricultural area before being discovered by the so-called “Sommerfrischler”, who flocked from the cities to the countryside in the summer months.
Things to do in Übersee
Art enthusiasts can visit Exter-Kunsthaus, which occupies the former home of the Impressionist painter, Julius Exter. In addition to showcasing his works, it presents changing exhibitions and hosts an artisanal market featuring local creatives. To see the moorland scenes and dreamy clouds that inspired Exter’s works, join a boat cruise across Lake Chiemsee.
One of Übersee’s most famous churches is the Pfarrkirche St. Nikolaus, which was constructed in the early 20th century in a Neo-Gothic style. Admire its red-brick architecture before stepping inside to explore the opulently decorated interior, which is adorned with religious paintings and a gilded altar. Just across the Moosbach River is a leafy park with a children’s playground.
In the summer months, you can refresh with a swim at the Strandbad Übersee, which overlooks a picturesque bay north of the town centre. Its laid-back beach bar is a popular gathering spot at sunset when you can enjoy a drink with your feet sunk into the sand. For something more active, head next door to the high ropes course at Parker Outdoor or rent a boat to explore Lake Chiemsee at your leisure.
