Located directly across the Danube River from Ulm, Neu-Ulm was established in the early 19th century as part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. It flourished a few decades later with the building of the Federal Fort of Ulm and became an important garrison town following the arrival of the Augsburg railway line in 1853.
