Centred around the village of Skei, Surnadal is a sprawling municipality in the Norwegian county of Møre og Romsdal. It hugs the shores of several fjords and is traversed by the salmon-filled River Surna, which attracts anglers from near and far. Providing a backdrop to Surnadal are the forested peaks of the Trollheimen mountain range.
Things to do in Skei
Surnadal is home to one of the few remaining Y-shaped churches in Norway, the Mo Kirke, which was designed by Erik Jakobsen Holten in the 18th century. It exhibits a bright red exterior and houses a 17th-century altarpiece from the historic stave church that once stood on the site. Also of note is the striking Stangvik Kirke, a whitewashed church on the shores of the Stangvikfjorden.
Surnadal is a convenient base for exploring Trollheimen, a rugged mountain range renowned for its diverse alpine flora. Hike through the majestic valley of Innerdalen or trek to the peak of Snota, which rises to 1,668 metres in height. Several of the area’s lakes are stocked with trout, making it a popular destination for anglers.
Fancy a round of golf? Head to the Surnadal Golf Park, which is nestled amidst picturesque surroundings on the Mo Farm. It boasts 9 holes set across a distance of 4,093 metres, as well as a clubhouse serving drinks and meals.
